About Smartresourcebasics

We build custom-made furniture from natural wood for households across Liverpool. This page sets out how the workshop started, what guides our daily work, and who is behind each piece we deliver.

How the Workshop Started

Smartresourcebasics was set up in 2023 by a small group of joiners who had grown tired of building furniture to someone else's specification sheet. The idea was straightforward: work directly with people in Liverpool who want a table, a wardrobe or a set of shelves made to fit their own room, in a timber they have chosen themselves. In the three years since, the workshop has taken on 70 completed jobs for 45 separate clients, with nine of them returning for a second commission once they needed another piece for a different room.

What We Are Trying to Do

The aim is not to be the biggest furniture maker in the city. It is to keep a short, direct line between the person who will use the furniture and the person cutting the wood. We take on work across five districts around Liverpool, and we keep the number of live projects small enough that each one gets proper attention from measurement through to delivery. Requests are usually answered within four hours, because a stalled reply is often the first sign of a workshop that has taken on more than it can manage.

How We Work

Every commission starts with a conversation about how a piece will actually be used - whether a dining table needs to seat six on a regular basis or occasionally stretch to ten, whether a wardrobe has to fit around a sloped ceiling. We work mainly in oak, ash and walnut, choosing boards for grain and moisture content before any cutting begins. Joints are cut by hand where the design calls for it, and finishes are chosen to suit how a household actually uses its furniture - a hard-wearing oil for a kitchen table, a lighter wax for a bedroom piece that sees less daily wear.

Nine Years' Worth of Requests, Nine Services

Over the three years since founding, the range of requests has settled into nine distinct services, from single furniture pieces to full fitted storage and restoration work on older solid-wood furniture. This range reflects what clients in Liverpool actually ask for, rather than a fixed catalogue decided in advance. The team stays at three people by design - enough to run more than one project at a time, small enough that nothing gets handed off to someone who was not part of the original conversation.
