Solid wood custom furniture piece crafted in Liverpool workshop

About Smartresourcebasics

Smartresourcebasics was set up in 2023 in Liverpool by a small group of joiners who wanted to work directly with solid wood rather than assemble pre-cut panel kits. The idea was straightforward: fewer standard catalogue pieces, more furniture measured and cut for a specific room. Three years on, that has not changed.

The workshop takes on kitchen tables, wardrobes, sideboards, benches and similar pieces made from oak, ash and other solid timber sourced through regional timber merchants. Each order starts with a site visit or a set of measurements sent by the client, followed by a drawing and a materials list before any cutting begins.

The business has completed 70 jobs for 45 clients across 5 areas of Liverpool and the surrounding boroughs since opening, with 9 clients returning for a second commission. Requests are usually answered within 4 hours during working hours. The team stayed intentionally small — three people — so that whoever measures the room is often the same person who builds the piece.

What guides the work

  • Solid material. No MDF cores or veneer shortcuts on load-bearing parts; joints are cut, not glued from pre-shaped blanks.
  • Fit before finish. Every piece is checked against the actual room dimensions before staining or oiling.
  • Plain communication. Clients get a written estimate and timeline before a deposit is asked for.
  • Small workload by design. The workshop limits how many commissions run at once to keep timelines realistic.

Wardrobes built to match sloped ceilings, alcoves or awkward corners common in Liverpool terraced houses. Internal layout, drawer count and door style are agreed on-site during measuring.

Low sideboard-style units with cable routing holes and ventilated compartments for set-top boxes. Finish options include oiled, waxed or lacquered surfaces to suit existing furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about ordering custom-made wooden furniture from Smartresourcebasics in Liverpool. If your question is not covered here, call +44 151 569 8204 or email info@smartresourcebasics.com.

We work mainly with oak, ash, walnut and pine, sourced from suppliers in the North West of England. Each species has different characteristics: oak is dense and durable, suited to dining tables and heavy-use pieces; ash has a lighter tone and flexible grain, often chosen for chairs; walnut offers a darker finish for statement furniture; pine is more affordable and works well for shelving or smaller units. During the initial consultation we discuss which timber fits your room, budget and how the piece will be used day to day.

Timescales depend on the complexity and size of the piece. A simple item such as a shelving unit or side table typically takes two to three weeks from design approval to delivery. Larger pieces, like dining tables, wardrobes or fitted storage, usually take four to six weeks, as timber needs time to be selected, cut and finished properly. We confirm a realistic completion date after the design is agreed, and we keep you updated if anything changes during production.

Yes, the first consultation is free of charge and can take place at your home in Liverpool or nearby, or over the phone if that suits you better. During this meeting we take measurements, discuss the style and function you need, and talk through wood options and rough costs. After that we typically reply to any follow-up request within four hours during working days. There is no obligation to proceed after the consultation.

We currently serve five districts in and around Liverpool, including the city centre and nearby residential areas. If you are unsure whether your postcode falls within our coverage, get in touch by phone or email with your address and we will confirm quickly. For locations slightly outside our usual range, we can sometimes arrange a visit depending on the scope of the project, so it is worth asking.

Yes. During the consultation we look at your existing furniture, wall colours and room layout to suggest a wood tone and design that fits in rather than clashes. We can also work from photographs or sketches if you have a particular look in mind, whether that is a traditional farmhouse style or a simpler contemporary design. Since our team is small, three people handle every project from design through to finishing, which keeps the details consistent from start to end.

Prices vary depending on wood type, size and complexity of joinery. A small side table might start from a few hundred pounds, while a large fitted wardrobe or dining set will cost more due to the volume of timber and hours involved. We provide a written quote after the consultation, broken down by materials and labour, so you know exactly what you are paying for before any work begins. There are no hidden charges added later.

Yes, alongside full custom builds we offer nine separate services, including repair and restoration of existing wooden furniture, refinishing, small alterations to fit new spaces, and made-to-measure inserts for cupboards or alcoves. You do not need to commission a full new piece to work with us. If you have a table with a damaged surface or a wardrobe that needs resizing, describe the issue when you contact us and we will advise whether it is a straightforward repair or something more involved.

Depending on the piece and its intended use, we apply either a hardwax oil finish or a water-based lacquer. Hardwax oil penetrates the wood and gives a natural matte look, ideal for tables and worktops that see regular use, since it can be spot-repaired if scratched. Lacquer gives a more sealed, durable surface and is often chosen for pieces exposed to more moisture, such as bathroom shelving. We discuss the right option for your piece during the design stage.

Yes, you are welcome to bring your own sketches, measurements or reference images. We will review the design for structural feasibility, suggest adjustments if needed for the chosen wood type, and confirm dimensions before starting work. If you do not have a design ready, our team can put one together based on your description of the piece and how it will be used, then walk you through it before production begins.

Once a piece is finished, we arrange delivery to your address within our five service areas around Liverpool. For larger items such as wardrobes, bookcases or dining tables, our team brings the piece in sections where needed and assembles it on site, checking it sits level and fits the space correctly. Smaller items are usually delivered ready to use. We confirm delivery dates in advance and aim to work around your schedule.

Yes, we ask for a deposit before ordering materials, since timber is purchased specifically for each project. The deposit amount is agreed and stated clearly on the written quote, along with the balance due on completion. This covers the cost of wood and secures your place in our production schedule. Full payment terms are explained before any work starts, so there are no surprises later in the process.

Solid wood needs a stable environment away from direct heat sources such as radiators, and away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can cause uneven fading. Wipe surfaces with a slightly damp cloth rather than soaking them, and avoid placing very hot items directly on wood without a mat. Pieces finished with hardwax oil can be re-oiled every year or two to keep the surface protected. We provide simple written care instructions with every completed piece.

Smartresourcebasics was founded in 2023, and over these three years our small team has completed 70 jobs for 45 clients across Liverpool and the surrounding districts we serve. Around one in five clients has returned for a second commission, often a matching piece or an item for a different room. We keep our client base modest by design, since a team of three can only take on a certain number of projects at a time without compromising the level of attention each one gets.

Before production starts, we confirm dimensions, wood type and finish in writing so expectations are clear on both sides. If, once delivered, something does not match what was agreed, contact us and we will assess the issue and arrange a correction where reasonable, such as an adjustment to fit or a finish touch-up. Because each piece is made to order and built around your specific measurements, we encourage close review of the design and samples at the approval stage to avoid misunderstandings later.

We are available Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30. We are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. You can reach us by phone at +44 151 569 8204 or by email at info@smartresourcebasics.com, and our office is located at 182 Penny Lane, Liverpool, L37 4ZW. Requests sent by email or through the contact form on this page usually receive a reply within four hours during our working days.

★★★★★

We asked for an oak dining table that would seat eight without dominating the room. The finished piece is exactly the size we discussed, and the grain match across the leaves is something a flat-pack table could never give us.

★★★★

Good build on our alcove shelving, solid ash, no flex when loaded with books. One shelf edge had a slightly visible join that they sanded down again after I pointed it out. Would use them again.

★★★★★

Replied to my enquiry within a few hours and had a first sketch back to me the same week. That pace mattered because we were on a tight moving-in date.

★★★★★

The walnut sideboard looks good and the joinery is tidy. It took a bit longer than the estimate to arrive, and communication during that stretch could have been more frequent. Still a piece I am happy to own.

★★★★★

Ordered a bed frame in birch. Simple design, no squeaks after four months of use, and the price was lower than two other quotes we got locally.

★★★★★

We had an oddly shaped nook under the stairs that no shop unit would fit. They measured it twice, built a template first, then delivered a cabinet that slots in without a single gap. Worth the wait.

★★★★

Solid desk, nice finish, arrived on the agreed date. The drawer runners feel a touch stiff, but a light wax fixed most of it. Overall a fair result for the money.

★★★★★

Second job with this workshop, this time a set of matching bedside tables to go with the wardrobe they made us last year. Same attention to the joints, same steady updates by email.

★★★★★

Straightforward from the first call. They asked about our budget early, kept to it, and did not try to upsell extras we did not need.

★★★★

Commissioned a bookcase in beech for a room with an uneven floor. They fitted levelling feet and adjusted the back panel on site so it stands flush against the wall. One shelf was cut slightly narrow and had to be remade, which added a week, but the final fit is correct.

★★★★★

Small job, just two floating shelves in oak for the kitchen, but they treated it with the same care as a bigger order. Quick turnaround too.

★★★★★

Ash coffee table, cut from a single wide board so there is no visible seam on top. It is the piece guests ask about first when they visit.

★★★★★

The finished wardrobe is well made and the hinges are quiet. The initial quote changed slightly once they saw the room in person, which caught us off guard, though they explained the reason clearly and it was a modest difference.

★★★★★

Reliable and plain about what they can and cannot do within a given timeframe. No overpromising, and the console table arrived exactly when they said it would.

★★★★★

We needed a media unit that would hide the cables from three different devices and still look plain from the front. They built in a routed channel at the back and a hinged panel we did not even think to ask for. Small detail, big difference day to day.
